LifeSiteNews in Portuguese Reaches First Birthday
By Matthew Cullinan Hoffman, Latin America Correspondent
MEXICO CITY, June 3, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) — Notícias Pró-Família (Pro-Family News), LifeSiteNews.com’s service in Portuguese, has completed its first year of service, with over 42,000 page views and wide republishing of its articles in the Portuguese-speaking blogosphere.
Although the first articles published on the site are dated from early April of 2009, they were posted in late May, with backdating to reflect the date of their authorship.
Pro-life and pro-family activist Julio Severo provides the translations to the site, and says that it has made a difference in the debate over life and family issues in Brazil, a country whose liberal president has promoted the depenalization of abortion, as well as special rights and even media censorship in favor of the homosexualist cause,
“Through its Portuguese version, Notícias Pró-Família, LSN show that the threats Brazilians are facing are already reality in the US, Canada and Europe,” said Severo, commenting on the site’s impact. “So LSN articles are uniquely equipped to inform and prepare Brazilians concerned about family issues to confront the cultural war.”
He also notes that “Notícias Pró-Família has had a special role in special battles. In the known case of the nine-year-old Brazilian girl, whose twins were aborted and whose abortion was opposed by Brazilian archbishop Sobrinho Cardoso and supported by archbishop Fisichella, Brazilians learned the international impact of this pro-life battle. And they learned who did right and who did wrong. No media in Brazil, secular or otherwise, reported more on this case than Notícias Pró-Família.”
Following the coverage, Notícias Pró-Família was given the Blog Apostolado da Vida (Apostolate of Life Blog) award by the Brazilian organization Pró-Vida de Anápolis, which is one of the most influential pro-life and pro-family organizations at the national level in Brazil.
Since it began posting translations of LSN articles last year on Google’s Blogger hosting service, over 150 bloggers have become members of the site, and the translations are widely reproduced in the Brazilian blogosphere.
LSN hopes in the future to add a site with Spanish translations of its articles, and eventually original Portuguese and Spanish-language reporting for readers of those languages.
