Olavo de Carvalho asks Brazil’s Bolsonaro administration to launch investigation against evangelical author Julio Severo
By Julio Severo
In an appeal to Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s administration, Olavo de Carvalho, a self-exiled Brazilian immigrant to the U.S. since 2005, called for strong measures against people who write against him, whom he classified as “slanderers.” In particular, he pointed out to me, Julio Severo, as the main threat to him. He said:
“I need some investigative services that the Brazilian government could do for me. For example, I have several smearers who live hidden in uncertain and unknown places abroad. I’ll give you an example: This Julio Severo. This guy has been hiding from Brazil for over 20 years, writing things against me. He wrote to all members of the Inter-American Institute. Every week he sent a message. He accuses me of being a terrorist, a spy, a drug smuggler and everything else you can imagine. How can I find this guy and file a lawsuit against him?”
Instead of confirming that the information I sent to the members of the Inter-American Institute said that he has a history of occultism and the advocacy of the Inquisition through a left-wing revisionism, he accused me of saying what I never said to these members or anyone else (terrorist, spy, drug smuggler, etc.). His mental or ideological or spiritual instability led him to lie against me to protect his occult history. Even though he accuses communists of lying and slandering, he lied and slandered like them to protect his dark history like theirs. Check out the video here: https://youtu.be/__HgUyuZcRo
Carvalho’s appeal was published on video on June 11, 2020. In fact, this appeal was more specific than his June 7, 2020 video, where he threatened to topple the Bolsonaro administration complaining: “There is a group hating Olavo de Carvalho, fuck, for decades, and next you come and say you’re my friend. You are not my friend.” Check out the video here: https://youtu.be/dnvsemsyYTA
Reacting to this video, Brazilian televangelist Silas Malafaia called Olavo de Carvalho a coward and bankrupt astrologer after Olavo threatened to topple Bolsonaro administration.
Carvalho’s threats are taken seriously because President Jair Bolsonaro himself takes him seriously. When Carvalho wants one of his adherents in the government, Bolsonaro meets his will. When Carvalho doesn’t want to, Bolsonaro fires him. Will it be different about his request for an investigation against me?
Although in the June 7 video Carvalho did not name the members of the group that hates him, in the June 11 video he made sure to reveal what he thought was the main name: Julio Severo.
As a spoiled boy filled with tantrum, he complained that Bolsonaro is not his friend — an emotional ploy to get Bolsonaro to start some investigation against me and deliver my head on a tray to him.
His complaints against me are not new. In a video of January 27, 2019, shortly after Bolsonaro was inaugurated as president, Carvalho called for the Brazilian Federal Police to investigate me on the allegation that my accusations against him involving the Inquisition and occultism are collusions paid by the Russian government that threaten the Brazilian national security. In the video, he accused: “Julio has already had several trips to Russia paid for by the Russian government. Why is [the Federal Police] not going to investigate this?”
I made a single trip to Russia, accompanied by American evangelical, Catholic and Jewish leaders to attend a conservative pro-life conference in the Kremlin. This trip was paid in large part by American evangelicals and some Brazilian evangelicals. Carvalho felt that this one trip gave him the perfect excuse to fantasize countless trips of mine paid for by the Russian government. Anyone who knows me personally knows about the financial difficulties I go through to support myself in a foreign country. My life, even by far (without a home and without perks), does not seem like the life of a man supported by a foreign government. Supporting seven children is a big challenge.
Carvalho slandered me on video and even asked for an investigation by the Federal Police against me based on his slander. Wouldn’t it be more correct for the Federal Police to investigate the person who is threatening and defaming a family man?
In his defamation of June 11, 2020, Carvalho said that I accuse him of being “a terrorist, a spy, a drug smuggler.” According to him, allegedly I sent these charges to the Inter-American Institute (IAI), whose members have been in contact with me for a decade. Some of them had contact with me before the IAI existed.
Although I have weekly contact with several members of the IAI, and have had personal meetings with men connected to the IAI, none of them has ever received correspondence from me with the accusations that Carvalho invented of me against himself.
My texts to the IAI members and to the American evangelical public are that Carvalho has an occult background and his alleged conservative behavior is guided by the training he received at the Traditionalist School, an esoteric cult where its members follow the Islamic sorcerer René Guénon.
It is not a crime to denounce the occult. And there is no reason for an investigation by the Federal Police or the government in this subject.
There is no reason for jailing anyone making such reports.
But it is a crime to slander, saying that the victim accused Carvalho of “being a terrorist, a spy, a drug smuggler.” Such accusation is totally false. Such accusation is slander. Is slander a crime or not?
Carvalho thus uses the freedom of American laws to defame his victim and still insist that the Bolsonaro administration should take strong measures against the victim, that is, me, Julio Severo.
Carvalho threatens his victim exclusively because he does not like what his victim writes against him and his ideas.
Carvalho’s appeal to the Bolsonaro administration against me, based entirely on defamation and malicious fantasy, constitutes a threat to my free speech and perhaps even my physical integrity and subsistence of my several children.
Threat is not a true philosopher’s response to the theoretical denunciations from an evangelical writer who uses documents to write his articles.
Threat is the resort of dictatorial individuals who hate to be confronted in their lies and dirty secrets.
I don’t know if the Bolsonaro administration, which has been satisfying Carvalho’s tantrums, has already started an investigation against me because of my evangelical views, but given this threat, which is duly recorded and on video, I appeal to American evangelical leaders to help me, because I am a father with seven children aged 3 to 15 years.
I don't have the strength to protect myself against the Bolsonaro administration.
In 2019, Carvalho called for an investigation by the Federal Police against me.
In 2020, he reinforces the appeal and calls for Bolsonaro administration investigation services against me.
Who can help me and my family against these threats from a Rasputin that influences the Bolsonaro administration?
I call on American evangelical leaders to pressure the Trump administration regarding Olavo de Carvalho, who lives in Richmond and enjoys, uses and abuses the freedoms that the United States gave him to threaten and persecute a Brazilian evangelical for the “crime” of denouncing Carvalho’s occultism and also denouncing that he is the greatest Brazilian defender of the Inquisition, who tortured and killed Jews and evangelicals.
Can the Trump administration do anything to help a Brazilian evangelical against the threats from a self-exiled Brazilian immigrant who uses and abuses American freedoms?
