“Idiotic astrologer”: Response from Brazilian televangelist Silas Malafaia to Olavo de Carvalho, who said that “Every evil that happens in Brazil comes from evangelical churches”

Countering slander and attacks against evangelicals, Silas Malafaia replied that Olavo de Carvalho is an idiotic astrologer who is always talking nonsense and bringing troubles to Brazil.

Carvalho’s attack on evangelicals came in a comment in which he included not only evangelicals, but also other institutions. He said:

“Every evil that happens in Brazil comes from one or more of these institutions: Armed Forces, Communist Party, Freemasonry, Catholic Church, Evangelical Churches. Not that they are per se necessarily bad, but whoever moves up the ranks of one of them ends up trying to use it to take advantage and fuck the rest of the population. To demolish the prestige of these institutions would be to take away the murder weapon from millions of cheaters.”

According to Silas Malafaia, who has become the greatest conservative evangelical reference in Brazil, mainly in the fight against the ideology of abortion and sodomy, Olavo de Carvalho, who has a negative influence as a Rasputin in the life of President Jair Bolsonaro and his children, is an “idiotic astrologer” who brings “troubles to Brazil instead of helping.”

In an interview with Época magazine, Malafaia said:

“What to expect from an idiot? Foolishness! What damage are churches doing to Brazil, taking people out of the gutter, acting where the State has no power? What is the disgrace that plagues our nation? Drugs. No government, no federal agency has the authority to deliver a person from drugs. Churches help many families by plucking them out from division and destruction by drinking and drugs. And do churches cause harm? Or is he causing harm? He is an idiot who lives hidden in another country giving tips. And another thing: I’m a friend of Bolsonaro. I have indicated anyone for the Bolsonaro administration and are we who use the church to take advantage? Who indicated people in the government? We or a stupid astrologer, who’s been talking nonsense and bringing troubles instead of contributing to the good of Brazil?”

Malafaia is considered Bolsonaro’s biggest evangelical supporter and responsible for leading millions of evangelicals to vote for him in 2018.

But while Malafaia has not indicated anyone for the Bolsonaro administration, Carvalho has already nominated several of his followers — who ended in all kinds of confusion and even scandals, including imitation of Nazi nationalism.

Although he was one of the most famous astrologers in Brazil, Carvalho hates to be reminded that he already practiced astrology as his profession. In a clash with Malafaia in 2019, he became so nervous and out of control that he accused Luther of believing more in astrology than he does, when in fact Luther categorically condemned astrology, saying:

“Astrology is framed by the devil, to the end people may be scared from entering into the state of matrimony, and from every divine and human office and calling; for the star-peepers presage nothing that is good out of the planets; they affright people's consciences, in regard of misfortunes to come, which all stand in God's hand, and through such mischievous and unprofitable cogitations vex and torment the whole life” (Luther’s Table-Talk).

Malafaia, as the greatest evangelical representative against abortion and the gay agenda, is to be congratulated for speaking out against Carvalho’s attacks on evangelicals and for putting Carvalho in his right place: stupid astrologer. Such public rebuke is important because although the vast majority of Carvalho’s adherents are a band of confused Catholics, there is a minority of confused evangelicals who turn a blind eye to all the astrologer’s attacks on evangelicals and blindly follow his foolishness. Among the confused evangelicals are Congressman Marco Feliciano, an Assemblies of God minister, and Rev. Daniel Lopez, of Snowball Church, who have cognitive problems and are unable to read and interpret Carvalho’s texts attacking evangelicals.

However, anyone who has no cognitive problems could see the seriousness of Carvalho’s attacks.

“Poor Olavo, he should come and live in Brazil to be able to talk about Brazil,” said Silas Câmara to Veja, the Brazilian counterpart of Time magazine. Camara is president of the Evangelical Parliamentary Caucus, composed of 195 of the 513 representatives of Brazil’s House of Representatives. Historically, the Evangelical Parliamentary Caucus is the most conservative force in the Brazilian Congress, always acting against abortion and the gay agenda.

Carvalho is a self-exiled Brazilian immigrant in the U.S. since 2005.

Almost 20 years ago, I was a spiritual advisor to the president of the Evangelical Parliamentary Caucus, having lectured at its first conference in 2004.

Carvalho’s adherents are so confused and oblivious to reality that when he is called an astrologer, they think it is “cursing.” They refuse to accept the reality that he worked as an astrologer and was deeply involved in all kinds of occultism, the marks of which appear, directly or indirectly, in his writings, language and philosophical ways. By far, the greatest “conservative” influence on Carvalho’s life was the occultist René Guénon, who was the spiritual father of Julius Evola, the guru of Italian fascism.

Carvalho and his adherents also hate when he is called Rasputin. But what to do if he has the same harmful influence on President Jair Bolsonaro’s life as the original Rasputin did on the Russian tsar?

As for Carvalho’s attacks on evangelicals, it is a natural behavior, as evangelicals are the group that is most resistant to all kinds of sinister ideology.
